Sainsbury’s has announced that it is branching into the coffee-to-go market by trialling a new coffee bar in-store at six of its supermarkets.
Named after the year the supermarket first opened its shop, ‘1869 Coffee’ will offer customers Sainsbury’s Own Brand coffees and teas, as well as pastries and cakes.
Run by Sainsbury’s colleagues with barista training, the coffee bar will be available to customers in Sainsbury’s West Green, Cambridge, Eddington, Slough, Watford, Alton and Armady way in Plymouth.
A recent report from Mintel revealed that the UK coffee shop market has risen by 37% over the last five years.
Sainsbury’s new coffee bars hope to tap into this market by giving shoppers a new coffee-to-go offering that aims compete with coffee shops like Starbucks and Caffè Nero as well as its rival Morrisons which has its own coffee bar concept.
“By giving our customers the chance to grab and go a range of hot drinks and snacks at the front of the store, we are differentiating our in-store offer and delivering a great value takeaway experience,” said Adrian Cook, Director of Fresh Foods at Sainsbury’s.
