In order to be an effective producer, you need to stay ahead of the trends and know what your consumer base is looking for. So what are consumers stocking their kitchens with today? That’s a good question, and one that consumer market research company NPD Group has answered in the form of a study and an infographic.

“Particularly with the millennial generation, we see them using a lot of fresh ingredients, fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, more so than other generations did at that same age,” Darren Seifer, food and beverage industry analyst for NPD, told Food Business News. “We see a lot of rice cookers being used more often with that group.”

But that’s far from all that NPD Group observed in its consumer trend study. For one thing, there will always be a market for more convenient processed foods along with fresh and raw foods. So what products are filling kitchens along with fresh produce?

  • Almond Milk, a milk alternative at the top of its game.
  • Sriracha, a condiment still enjoying its moment in the trend spotlight.
  • Hazelnut spread, most likely leading with popular Ferrero-produced hazelnut chocolate spread Nutella.

Meanwhile, anything in a can is losing serious ground. While soda is still found in more than half of consumer households, its popularity is starting to slip. Interest in canned vegetables has plummeted even further, losing 20 percent of its previous consumer base.
