Mondelez International has launched operations in Bangladesh in a bid to expand the US snack maker’s presence in South Asia.

The American confectionery firm has established its country headquarters in the capital of Dhaka, marking its entry into the eight most populous country in the world with around 160 million consumers.

In May, Kallappa Pattanashetti joined Mondelez Bangaladesh Private Limited as the company’s country head.

Pattanashetti previously served as senior brand manager of powdered beverage brand Tang in India.

"With our existing experience in Bangladesh, we see tremendous opportunity to bring in our much-loved products to this region and continue to grow here," Pattanashetti told Xinhua News Agency.

"We have inaugurated our corporate office in Dhaka, rolled out billing systems and are currently in the process of establishing a new warehouse. Over the next two years, our focus will be to invest in building our route-to-market and growing market share for our much-loved brands."

The new represents Mondelez International’s latest move to grow the company’s international presence.

In April, Mondelez invested $90mn to build what it described as a ‘factory of the future’ in Bahrain.

The snack maker also opened a new R&D facility in Singapore earlier this year.
