For the 11th year in the row, Tokyo has retained its position as the city with the most Michelin starred restaurants in the world.
This year, the Japanese capital inched further ahead of its rival Paris with 234 Michelin starred restaurants, up from 227 last year, according to the 2018 guide.
Tokyo knocked Paris off the top spot when Michelin first came to the city in 2017, and it remains the highest-rated culinary city in the 28 countries covered by the company.
All the 12 three-star restaurants in Tokyo retained their prestigious status, including the well-renowned sushi restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro Honten, Kyoto dining restaurant Azabu Yukimura and Joel Robuchon, a French fine dining restaurant.
Although there are no new three-starred restaurants, there are five new two-star restaurants and twenty-three new one-star restaurants.
According to Michelin, these include five new sushi spots, five French restaurants, four Italian offerings and three Chinese restaurants.
“The Michelin guide reflects the great ability and skills found in Tokyo,” said Michael Ellis, International Director in charge of the Michelin guides.
“Sushi, French, Italian Tempura and Izakaya… the rich variety of our selection is testament to the gastronomic strength of Tokyo, a city where even ramen restaurants have stars.”
