Instacart has hugely strengthened its east coast business in the United States after striking a deal with Wegmans.

The grocery delivery service, which was founded five years ago in San Francisco, is now available to Wegmans customers in Washington D.C., suburbs of northern Virginia and Maryland, with further expansion planned.

“Wegmans is known to be one of the highest-quality grocers and, as such, they typically do everything in house,” Instacart’s chief business officer Nilam Ganenthiran told Recode. “We are very grateful and proud.”

The announcement comes soon after similar deals were concluded by Instacart with Publix and Shop & Stop among others.

They deliver in a 20 to 30-minute range of each store and promise customers their shopping within an hour of the order being placed.

From Wegmans' 92 stores in six states, they turn over an annual sum of $8.4bn.
